Regular unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) cable is fine for most sites. It’s useful where the electronic-noise sources might consist of a server or two, a laser printer, a few relatively distant fluorescent lights, and somebody’s old desktop radio.But you know that’s not going to work at your site. Maybe you need to route your network cable next to an elevator, a compressor, a belt-drive motor, or a big bank of fluorescents; places where the electromagnetic and radio-frequency interference (EMI/RFI) would wreak havoc with unshielded cable. Or maybe you need to run cable through Intensive Care, or close to sensitive detection equipment.
