Current Probes & Sensors

Electric current is the motion of charge through a conducting material. Current Probes & Sensors are tools for measuring it. Connected to oscilloscopes, they convert the current to a voltage.

Basically, there are three main types of current probes: Sense (or Shunt) Resistor, Clamp-on Current Probe, and Rogowski Coil Current Probe. Each of these types has its own pros and limitations.

Small and cheap sense resistors are used for a direct type of measuring techniques. However, there is a tradeoff between burden voltage and measurement accuracy.

A clamp-on probe is a tool that allows measuring in an indirect way, thus the probe is not electrically connected to the tested device. Its main element is a current sensor. There are two types of sensors used: a current transformer and a Hall sensor. The first one is used for measuring alternating current, while the second sensor is able to deal with direct current as well. The tool can be a bit pricy, but it is easy to use and gives accurate readings.

Rogowski coil current probes are able to make measurements in difficult-to-reach places. They are flexible to use and usually cost less than the other types. However, they measure AC only.

Choosing current probes & sensors, consider their bandwidth, optimum current range, and the level of noise. Use them properly and be sure that you get the best results.

At Mega Depot, you can find a number of high-quality current probes and sensors from the most trusted brands.
