What is wastewater? Essentially, it is used water that goes down the drains from homes, businesses, factories, etc. on a day-to-day basis.
Since wastewater flows by gravity, it has to be continuously elevated to maintain the necessary height for flow generation. A wastewater lift station plays an important role in transporting wastewater to treatment facilities. It is used to lift wastewater to a higher point via pipes.
In this article, we will explain how to use a Mercoid pump controller and a submersible level transmitter to control the pump in a wastewater lift station.

The MPC Pump Controller offers versatile level control in a 1/4 DIN package. It is compatible with almost any level transmitter style. It displays the present level & the main set point value. A programmable level differential is designed for on & off control of pump(s), valves, etc. through 2 SPDT relays.
The MPC pump controller features integrated high & low-level alarms, pump over temperature protection, the indication of submersible pump seal failure, as well as pump alternation.
Applications: water & wastewater, sump & sludge pits, clarifiers, digesters, oil tanks, chemical storage tanks, and reservoirs.
The PBLT2 & PBLTX Submersible Level Transmitters are designed for reliable, long-lasting performance in the most demanding conditions. Both transmitters measure the height of liquid above the position in the tank referenced to atmospheric pressure. Each of these Mercoid submersible level transmitters features a special piezoresistive sensing element in a durable 316 stainless steel housing. Their large-diameter 316 stainless steel diaphragm seal is non-clogging and also resistant to damage from floating solids.
The PBLT2 features dual arrestor technology for lightning as well as surge protection, grounded to the case, effectively eliminating power supply surges & transients from lightning strikes. The PBLTX is UL-approved intrinsically safe to be used in various hazardous locations when used with a properly chosen barrier.
Both level transmitters come with a shielded and vented cable. The vent is protected using a maintenance-free filter that prevents particulate matter and/or water droplets from entering the transducer.
Applications: wastewater, sludge pits, clarifiers, digesters, alum tanks, chemical storage tanks, oil tanks, sumps, lime slurry, and reservoirs.
Lift stations are special pits that are located at points in the wastewater system for wastewater collection. Typically, there are 2 submersible pumps.
From the lift station, wastewater is pumped out to a higher level, allowing it to flow to the next lift station or directly to the wastewater treatment facility.
To manage the water levels in the lift station, use the Mercoid MPC pump controller with the Mercoid PBLT2/PBLTX level transmitter. The level transmitter is submersed in the tank and sends a linear output of the height of wastewater that is above it. Then, the pump controller receives the height input and controls the pumps based on the programmed settings.
The primary pump is activated when the wastewater level reaches a high threshold and deactivated once it drops to a designated low level. The secondary pump is used in case the first one fails to effectively drain the lift station and comes on at a set higher level above the pump.
Now you understand how a Mercoid pump controller and a level transmitter can be used for pump control in wastewater lift stations. Both devices are easy to use and ensure excellent performance.
