Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, began in the years following the Civil War to honor those soldiers who had died in the conflict. The name of this holiday came from the tradition of decorating the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. After World War I, the holiday evolved to honor all American military personnel who died in any war or military action.
