FLIR Ex-series Thermal Imagers

FLIR Ex-Series cameras are point-and-shoot thermal imaging cameras that give you access to a new dimension. A FLIR Ex-Series camera is an affordable replacement for a spot pyrometer. It provides a thermal image with temperature information on every pixel. The combined image storage of the new MSX, thermal, and visual formats makes the cameras incomparably easy-to-use.

The FLIR Ex-Series expands upon FLIR's past thermal cameras and delivers improved units designed to enhance the overall detail in each captured thermal image.

Four completely new thermal cameras make up the Ex-Series - the Flir E4, Flir E5, Flir E6, and Flir E8. All four Ex-Series thermal cameras share beautiful black and silver housing, which despite its sleek finish, can withstand a six-foot drop and return to active duty. MSX - Improving Thermal Images

Every model in the FLIR Ex-Series comes with the built-in FLIR's MSX technology. This mode is designed to make thermal images much clearer, filling them with detail that is usually lacking in other thermal imaging systems, thus really “changes the game” in the lower resolutions. With the new MSX enhancement, even lower resolutions have a sense of “clarity” that only higher resolutions cameras had before. The thermal data is the same, but it just feels much more usable in the MSX view.

This detail is achieved by actively blending a digital image with a thermal image. This way you get the heat measurements of a traditional thermal image while getting the detail you can see in a standard visual light image. With MSX enabled, a thermal image (which just looks like a mass of colors when MSX isn't enabled) turns into a detailed image, where specific components, items, and devices can be seen. Thus. it becomes significantly easier to analyze an image after capturing is done for the day.

MSX can be turned off and on as the user desires. The FLIR E4 also contains an auto-focusing mechanism, ensuring that thermal images can be captured without cumbersome adjustments to manual focus.



E4/E5/E6/E8 cameras are the introduction of a 45-degree lens as standard fitment. Most FLIR thermal cameras are shipped with a 25-degree lens, which, when combined with higher resolution, gives a great balance of field of view and measurement spot size. With the new Ex-Series, FLIR has decided in favor of a larger FOV, and it’s difficult to disagree with that decision. As with the MSX, this is an advancement that makes the camera fundamentally more useful in most field conditions. The user can see more of a wall, roof, or electrical panel in just one image, saving time in the field and making reporting simple.



High Thermal Sensitivity

Even the smallest temperature differences can affect the internal workings of machinery, equipment, and other applications. The FLIR E4 can determine differences in temperature as low as 0.15°C, allowing each captured thermal image to be highly accurate.

The other models in the EX series also further upgrade this sensitivity to even higher levels, steadily improving the accuracy as you move up to the FLIR E8.

Images are also captured with 80x60-pixel resolution. Combined with MSX and high thermal sensitivity, it ensures every image produced with the FLIR E4, to be as detailed as possible despite this being the entry-level product in the EX range.

Point, Shoot, and Capture

The FLIR E4 doesn't require loads of adjustments to menus and other functions to operate. Simply choose your thermal mode, point the camera at what you want to capture, and squeeze the trigger on the back of the device to instantly capture a thermal image.

To make the camera as easy-to-use as possible, FLIR has designed the E4 to be pistol-shaped, allowing the user to comfortably hold the camera and easily access all available functions. A large-size LCD screen is on the front of the device for viewing stored images or images in real-time, and the camera itself is surprisingly lightweight and won't get unwieldy during long-term testing procedures.

The E4 also runs on rechargeable batteries, giving it the portability needed to be used anywhere you need it.


Once images are captured they can be viewed directly on the camera because of a built-in thumbnail gallery. It is also possible to transfer data directly to a PC via a USB connection. Then downloaded images can be further interacted with by using the included FLIR software package.



With so many hardware and software innovations, price is almost an afterthought with the new Ex-Series. But FLIR has tackled that one, too, offering the new FLIR E4 thermal camera for a list price of just $995! That’s a true thermal camera with almost 5000 pixels for under a grand.
