A monocular appeared shortly after the creation of a telescope. Modern-day monoculars utilize both prisms and Keplerian optics. The main distinction that sets apart these two devices lies in the picture that is created - monoculars provide a 2D image, whereas binoculars create a 3D picture. Monoculars are chosen over their counterparts for two main reasons. The first one - it is required to have a lightweight compact optical tool. Even though present-day technologies allow to create binoculars that are compact and lightweight, a monocular of the same magnifying rate is always at least two times smaller and therefore lighter. The second one - it is impossible to use binoculars in some situations. Most frequently, monoculars are utilized by people with poor sight or without one eye at all.
